What Is Safe Steps?

Safe Steps is ELEVATE Therapy Services’ branded balance and walking program, built for adults who want to move through daily life with more confidence and less fear of falling. Rather than a generic exercise class, Safe Steps pairs a licensed clinician’s hands-on assessment with a personalized walking and balance plan — delivered in your own home, where the risks (and the routines) actually happen.

Falls are one of the most common — and most preventable — threats to independence as we age. Safe Steps is designed to catch balance and mobility issues early, before they lead to a fall, a hospital visit, or a loss of confidence that keeps you from doing the things you love. It pairs naturally with ELEVATE’s Physical Therapy and Medical Fitness programs for a complete continuum of care across Oakland & Macomb County.

How Safe Steps Works

1. In-Home Balance & Gait Assessment

We start with a hands-on evaluation of your balance, strength, walking pattern, and home environment — using clinical assessment tools to identify exactly where your fall risk lies and what’s driving it.

2. A Personalized Walking Plan

Your clinician builds a walking and strengthening program around your specific deficits and goals — whether that’s walking to the mailbox safely, managing stairs, or simply feeling steadier on your feet.

3. Guided In-Home Coaching

A licensed clinician coaches you through your program in your own home, correcting form, building strength safely, and adjusting your plan as you improve — real supervision, not a handout.

4. Progress Check-Ins

We reassess your balance and gait at regular intervals so you and your clinician can see real, measurable progress — and confirm your plan is still the right one for you.

Balance and mobility concerns don’t have to mean giving up your independence.

Is Safe Steps Right for You?

Safe Steps is built for anyone whose balance, walking, or confidence could use clinical support — including:

  • People managing conditions that affect balance, such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, or peripheral neuropathy
  • Graduates of physical therapy who want to maintain their gains
  • Caregivers and family members looking for a proactive way to help a loved one stay safe at home

Safe Steps Frequently Asked Questions

How is Safe Steps different from a regular exercise class?

Safe Steps is led by a licensed clinician, not a fitness instructor. Every plan starts with a hands-on balance and gait assessment, so your walking program is built around your specific deficits — not a one-size-fits-all class routine.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to start?

No referral is required to begin. We complete a thorough intake and balance screening, and we’re glad to coordinate with your physician when appropriate. If you’re a provider looking to refer a patient, you can do so directly through our Refer a Patient page.

Does insurance cover Safe Steps?

Safe Steps is offered on a cash-pay basis, which keeps scheduling flexible and avoids insurance restrictions on your care. HSA/FSA funds often apply. See our Payments & Insurance page for details.

How does Safe Steps fit with ELEVATE’s other services?

Safe Steps works well alongside ELEVATE’s Physical Therapy, Medical Fitness, and Senior & Disabled Care Advisors programs. Many clients start with Safe Steps to address balance and fall risk, then continue with broader mobility or fitness programming as their goals evolve.
